Hannah Cooper's dissertation titled "Ethics of Body Scanning - How Gracious Studio aims at turning the Gaze", explores the ways in which her vision of an alternative retail experiencethat, incorporating body scanning technology in the design, production and consumption processes, functions as a safe space and tool for turning societal gazes and empower the individual.
Primarily she analysed the pressures an individual finds themselves negotiating during the act of getting dressed. This discussion examines theories by Michel Foucault, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Erving Goffman, Pierre Bourdieu and Joanne Entwistle. Cooper then introduced body scanning as a tool for fashion production and consumption.
To gain empathy for an individual experiencing a full bodyscan, she underwent the process herself. The benefits and disadvantages of implementing this technology were analysed with the help of case studies, as well as her personal insight. She evaluated whether the benefits of incorporating body scanning technology into a retail experience outweigh the disadvantages and layed out ways in which she intends on turning the gaze at Gracious Studio.
